Miss Laxmi Gurung was crowned Miss Culture 2009, Pokhara. She was confident from the first round. Hearing her answers everyone in the public seat could easily guess that she is one to win the title. Her confidence to face the mass was backed up by her profession as a RJ and Education Consultant. After winning the contest, her colleges asked her to throw a party for them but she had something else in her mind. From her own saving, she visited Pokhara Aged Shelter and sponsored a meal for them. With such a humble personality and a goodwill gesture she has a long way to go and she is taking one step at a time.
Miss Shrinkhala Bajracharya, is the first runner-up of "Miss Culture 2009". She is beautiful, charming and has innocent gesture on her face. She has a beautiful eyes and she looks even pretty when she dances. Shrinkhala Bajracharya is a student and is currently studying Bachelors in Business Administration.
Here is an Excerpt of the interview with them.Who inspired you to take part in the “Miss Culture 2009”?
Laxmi Gurung: Of course, my family! I had participated in "Miss Teen" but at that time I was only selected in TOP Ten. So, this time I thought to show my talent by competing in "Miss Culture 2009" and my family totally supported my decision. An interesting thing happened this time as I was asked the same question in the top ten round "Which part of your body do you like to donate?"
In the miss teen Contest I had answered confidently "Eyes, because with the help of eyes you could see the beautiful world." But this answer did not qualify me for "Top Five". So, this time I thought to give some logical answer so I said "Kidney, as you could live on one kidney and save a person with other kidney".
Shrinkhala Bajracharya: I am deeply inspired by my mother. Since my childhood, I have been learning a lot of things about our culture and known its importance. Fortunately, I got a chance to promote and preserve my culture through this contest “Miss Culture 2009”.
Do you feel any change in your personality after Miss Culture 2009?
Laxmi Gurung: My lifestyle is same like before. I am a RJ and a consultant so I was confident before and now too. One thing that has changed now is that the circle of people who knows me have increased dramatically.
Shrinkhala Bajracharya: Obviously I do feel a lot of change in my personality like I have became more confident, optimist and presentable.
What is the best thing you like about your culture?
Laxmi Gurung: The best thing I like about my culture is Loshar. It helps to bring all Gurung people into one hub.
Shrinkhala Bajracharya: I like the custom and tradition of our culture. It’s peculiar and popular among the Nepalese society.
Can you speak your own ethnic language?
Laxmi Gurung: I can understand it but can't speak fluently. I am learning and I think I will be able to speak fluently in future.
Shrinkhala Bajracharya: Of course I do. I am quite fluent in speaking since my childhood.
In your view, why should we preserve our culture?
Laxmi Gurung: We need to preserve our culture because we are made out of it. I think forgetting our culture is like erasing our own identification, isn't it??
Shrinkhala Bajracharya: Our country Nepal is well known through out the world for its culture and tradition. If it fades away then it might loose its identity. Thus, I feel we should preserve our culture.
Do you think we need to make some modification to the superstitious norms and values of our culture and what is the prime thing that you would like to modify if given a chance?
Laxmi Gurung: I don't think there is much thing that needs modification in our culture but if I am given a chance then I would eliminate the caste hierarchy in Gurung. There is "char Jathe" and "Shorha Jathe" in Gurung and marriage between these castes is not allowed. So, I just want to eliminate this classification and would like all Gurung to have just one hierarchy in their caste that is "Gurung".
